Private loan programs, as opposed to Title IV programs, can help bridge your student's financing gap for school expenses, generally at much lower rates than credit cards. And, as with any education loan, it's in your student's interest to be conservative and only borrow what the student absolutely needs.

Qualifying for private loans is based on credit criteria established by each lender. Credit qualification criteria can vary by the type of loan, by whether the borrower is a student or parent, or by whether the loan is backed by a cosigner.
